PostSubject: Wormhole Physics   Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:38 pm

Right as you are all aware, the stargate opens a one way wormhole, but radio communication can still be maintained both ways, this is explained by them being radio waves and not solid matter, so this led me to think does that mean that you could shout from the sgc in front of the event horizon and anyone on the other side would be able to hear you? it seems likely as the shouting would be sound waves and they would also travel through..?

Thoughts anyone?

Also because it is one way, how in the episode "shades of grey" (when jack goes rogue to stop people stealing technology) at the end jack goes through but then sticks his arm back through to stop the rogues from dialing anywhere else, how can he put his arm back through the one way wormhole? and it can't be that he went through but left his arm the other side, as the stargate will not re-intergrate matter unless it all goes through....

Further more when kawolsky gets killed his head is through the event horizon surely when the gate was de-activated his head would have been removed? allthough this could be put down to stargate being a family show ^_^

Just some thoughts to discuss.

ok let's start with the arm:

this is what I think:

His arm didn't come out the other side, but instead was dematerialised, and stored in the buffer, essentially keeping the wormhole open because matter was still in the re-integration stage. (in other words, stuff was still in the wormhole) The wormhole would have eventually shut down after 38 minutes, pretty much destroying the part of his arm that was in the stargate. But when he pulls it out, it just rematerializes.

And as for the sound not going through the wormhole, I can explain that in one of two ways:

Either the sound waves, essentially being vibrations in the air, can't go through the stargate, because it's the air that is vibrating, and as we know, air doesn't go through the stargate, because it can detect the density of the object, effectively deciding whether or not the object should be going through. For example: If the stargate is fallnig through the air, air will not be rushing out of the other gate. So it would have to do with the density of the air itself, and the fact that the sound waves, UNLIKE RADIO WAVES which are really nothing, and have no density, can simply pass straight through the event horizon.

Also, it could be because of the Event Horizon itself, which resembles a standing puddle of water. The fact that the sound doesn't travel through the gate could be from the density of teh wormhole itself. For example, if someone is under water, they can't hear someone yelling above the water, because the sound is basically reflected off of the water.

Now, because it has been explained that the event horizon is not actually a puddle, and the water effect is pretty much an illusion, I am leaning to my first suggestion.

I think what it is, is the Stargate doesn't shutdown if a bod part or anything is in the process of EXITING the wormhole. He walks out, but slowly, as to keep his arm in the event horizon.
And as for Kowalski, the top of his head was in the event horizon, ENTERING, and the top of his head was lost in the event horizon.
Then again, Sci-Fi shows have had MANY flaws in their own physics Very Happy

Also, with Kawalski, they forced the gate to shut down purposely to kill him. They probably bypassed half a dozen failsafes in the gate's system just to do so.

On the thing about the sound, in the episode, Watergate, which still makes me think of Nixon, they say that the water didn't create enough pressure to pass through the event horizon's pressure sensors.

"as the stargate will not re-intergrate matter unless it all goes through.... "

That only applies to the Atlantis gates....upgrades.... because if you notice the Goa'uld do the thing jack did with his arm alot. but as tubes to feed the the prisoners, shoots to have the slaves pour the naquada/stuff, and in continuum a metal stairway for Baal to walk on.

"this is what I think:

His arm didn't come out the other side, but instead was dematerialised, and stored in the buffer, essentially keeping the wormhole open because matter was still in the re-integration stage. But when he pulls it out, it just rematerializes."

If you watch the episode he goes all the way into the gate....no arm is left behind...you see him fully enter the Event Horizon...

Right, but what I'm saying is, his arm was inside the event horizon, dematerialized, and then rematerialized when he came out.

it still doesn't explain how he was able to keep it on the other side when it was one of the 1st things to enter the horizon... I still say THAT was a mistake on the writer's/director's part...

When you dial a gate, you put in one symbol at a time, and then it immediately activates. But an incoming wormhole takes the time, to put in each of the seven/eight symbols, instead of instantly activating. So, your gate is activated, while the gate you're headed to is still dialing. But it may be the delay in a wormhole, by like three or so seconds, that gives time for the other gate to dial.

Could be due to the earth gate not having a DHD ? or like you say the delay from traveling such a great distance.
